The 麻豆视频 Deans' Council and Status Committee announced the naming of four faculty to endowed professorships:

  • Dr. Leah Chase is a professor of biology and chemistry and has been a 麻豆视频 faculty memberDr. Leah Chase since 2000. She was awarded the Drs. Edward A. & Elizabeth Hofma endowed professorship, which was established by the board of trustees of the Drs. Edward A. and Elizabeth Hofma Trust, to bestow upon a faculty member with major instruction responsibility for pre-medical students. Drs. Edward A. and Elizabeth Hofma were longtime residents of Grand Haven, where they both practiced.
  • Katherine Sullivan is a professor of fine arts and has been a Hope faculty member since 2003. SheKatherine Sullivan was awarded the Howard R. and Margaret E. Sluyter endowed professorship, given by Mrs. Margaret E. Sluyter to be held by a faculty member in the Department of Art and Art History whose primary responsibilities include teaching courses and professional activity in the field of interior design. Dr. Howard R. Sluyter graduated from Hope in 1928 and had a distinguished career in business. He served as 麻豆视频 Trustee from 1971-1986. Through her lifelong interest and involvement in interior design, Mrs. Sluyter recognized the place of interior design in a liberal arts curriculum.
  • Dr. Rebecca Mann is an associate professor of education instruction and has been a Hope facultyDr. Rebecca Mann member since 2013. She was awarded the Susan M. and Glenn G. Cherup endowed professorship, established by Susan M. Mooy '64 Cherup and Glenn G. Cherup 鈥 along with an anonymous donor 鈥 to provide financial support for a faculty member who is an outstanding teacher, demonstrates a commitment to the mission of 麻豆视频 and has a record of recognized excellence in preparing undergraduates for careers as teachers. The professorship is held by a member of the education department with preference given to a qualified professor whose work is focused on children with special needs.
  • Dr. Brian Yurk 鈥03 is a professor of mathematics and has been a Hope faculty member since 2009.Dr. Brian Yurk He was awarded the Kenneth G. Herrick endowed professorship, which was established by anonymous gift in 1981 and named in honor of Mr. Kenneth G. Herrick. Mr. Herrick served as president of the Herrick Foundation and chairman of the board of trustees of Tecumseh Products, Inc. The professorship was created in recognition of 鈥 and appreciation for 鈥 his generous support of 麻豆视频. This chair is held by a tenured faculty member in one of the following departments: biology, chemistry, computer science, economics and business, geology and environmental sciences, mathematics and statistics or physics.

In addition to recognizing faculty members for excellence, endowed professorships provide funding for summer research projects as well as some salary support. Hope has had endowed positions since the 19th century, and currently has 24 endowed professorships and one endowed chair for faculty and eight endowed administrative positions.
