Day1: Peatlands

As a student in the Day1: Peatlands program, you will participate in an active research project investigating the impact of climate change on Michigan ecosystems. The program starts with a three-day field trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula before the start of classes. During the trip, you will develop the skills to make field observations, measure greenhouse gas fluxes and collect environmental samples while camping with your instructors and fellow students. You’ll bond with your peers (both first-year students and upperclass TAs) even before the start of classes. Back on campus, you will use the samples you collected in an authentic research project on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from these important ecosystems — all while developing essential chemistry lab techniques.

Community Details

• Start off your college career immersed in research
• Move in to campus and begin building community one week early
• Our camping trip will include sleeping in tents, preparing meals and packing our equipment — rain or shine
• This course can count toward your General Chemistry I laboratory requirement
• The You Are Mostly Not Human first-year seminar (FYS) course is designed to accompany Day1: Peatlands — consider putting this course high on your list when selecting FYS courses
• In addition to the Peatlands course community, optionally choose to enrich your first-year experience by living with other Day1 students in Voorhees Hall, the designated Day1 residence hall
